That's Black8Driver off Retro-Rides, AFAIK it's turbo 4cyl Vauxhall? Could be wrong though, it sounds evil for a four-pot.

I think it's something like that, a modern VX engine - it's been in a few magazines, either Retro Cars or Practical Performance Car or possibly both.

                                      Posted: Tue Aug 19, 2008 11:28 pm

Ok...so i got this anciant generator. here it is in its happy generatorness.

Cost £5, in unrunning condition. I got it home and after cleanign gunk out of the fuel lines, changing oil, and replacing diodes in the generator, it was running and powering my stick welder!

Anyway....decided that it should be stripped because it was burning oil. So here it is on the bench of doom. The bench of doom was covered in an assortment of little parts from other projects...and after fishing all the tools out of it, i decided that i should just cover all the assorted small parts with an old sheet...rather than pick them all up and sort them.

After that, the engine and generator combo was taken off the frame, and i attempted to seperate them.

After alot of swearing, and vein attempts to get the crank shaft to seperate from the generator...i ended up popping the generator end bearing instead...so i was left with this: the engine with the generators rotor stuck to it.

Getting this off the crank shaft took a day and broke about 6 spanners. But...eventually...this morning....it came off:

I welded the frame up where it split

Engine all stripped down. Notice the rather agricultural, and not very effective muffler. I think it was a later addition, since its held on with a hose clip!

dodgy repair no1: i dont know why...but someone ground the lube splasher off the end of the con rod. Its supposed to have this spike stickign out of the bottom to splash oil about the crank case. But someone crudely ground it off. Why...beats me. Maybe it snapped off. But...they wernt stupid. They knew it was a splash lubed engine, so they added a splasher, made out of sheet steel, held on with one of the big end's bolts.

Then we get this...the biggest dodgy repair. thats chemical metal!

And from the inside...you can see thers an aluminium plate, but also part of the bore has been built up with chemical metal!

Ignition seems to be all ok

and...everythgin i removed...soaking in a mix of kerosene, 2stroke oil, wd40 and other stuff, de-rusts overnight quiet well.

Ok, next part will be re-assembly once i locate new rings, and hopefully a new block!

If it was Chevrolet badged then it's a Chevrolet Lumina APV:

There were also Pontiac and Oldsmobile versions, the Trans Sport and Silhouette respectively. That does look like the Chevrolet version though.

These MPVs are known by the nickname "Dusterbuster", due to their shape.
